DescriptionDecorated with a variation on Japanese Kakiemon flowers, this refined container demonstrates the emergence of new vessel forms in the 18th century, including purpose-specific serving dishes for savoury foods and condiments. The cruet has containers for salt, pepper and mustard, which were essential ingredients on the table, especially for the making of a well-balanced salad according to cooks and authors of the period. In addition, salt was a vital commodity, not only as a flavor enhancer but for preserving foods.
