DescriptionThe French porcelain manufactory of Saint-Cloud made some of the first porcelain condiment dishes; these include salts, mustard pots, sugar casters, and egg cups. This egg cup is decorated in underglaze blue in imitation of Chinese porcelain, which is one of the factory’s hallmark styles. However, painters often applied the colour scheme to European ornaments and motifs – for instance the scrollwork and lambrequin designs seen on this piece were inspired by the designs of Jean Berain I. The piece also shows the influence of silver on porcelain; in this case the moulded ribs decorating the egg cup were most probably inspired by French silver examples.
