DescriptionThe vase depicts the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1147 and located in Leeds. Closed by Henry VIII during the Reformation, it consequently fell into a state of ruin. The decoration shows common features associated with Mary Helen Goodyer’s style, including intricate designs incised into layers of coloured slip and a taste for botanical motifs, here framing the central scene featuring the abbey. George Leighton Parkinson, who collaborated with Goodyer on the vase, specialized in the rendering of such architectural landmarks and English pastoral scenes.
