DescriptionChantilly is one of the many European factories that turned to Japanese porcelain as a source of inspiration. This saucer is decorated in the Kakiemon style and shows the “squirrel and grape” design. According to Chinese and Japanese cultures, images of grapes and squirrel signified a wish for many sons. However, European decorators who did not know the meaning of the motif mistook the squirrel for a rat.
